Hi Steve! Joe Biden was, arguably, the most centrist candidate the dems could've run in '20. On top of that, not to sound superficial but, he's an old white man that is a practicing Catholic, from coal country, with a gorgeous (to me) blonde haired, blue eyed wife. Yet, with all of this, maga and their allies have painted him as some kind of hyper-liberal leftist...and I'm not even talking about MTG's unforced error, comparing him to FDR and LBJ. What would they do with a President Sanders or Warren? Do they know they're lying and just trying to muddy the water? President Biden is the best POTUS of my lifetime. I'm 54.
I just read a study that shows a majority of Republicans still believe the 2020 election was stolen— because Fox News tells ‘em this is true. And so, furious and heartsick, I ask: How can we allow a group of cynical shysters- in plain view- continually (and successfully) chip away at the truth, which is the bedrock of Democracy and the Rule of Law? They LOOK like a regular news station. Sean Hannity SAYS he’s a patriotic American. And so they’re stealing the essence of our country from us. Seems to me that Fox News has almost single-handedly destroyed people’s faith in—and understanding of—the Rule of Law. Lawsuits clearly don’t stop them. My mind just keeps asking, How can we stand by and watch this? I think of that Russian woman who marched behind the state TV anchor with a sign saying These Are All Lies. What keeps someone at Fox from doing that? Point being- they’ll lose their job but they won’t be imprisoned-/ BECAUSE we still have freedom. I can’t believe we must simply stand by and watch.
Have you read the book Fever in the Heartland about the rise and fall of the KKK in Indiana? Do you think that racism and fear of the other is now so cast in the DNA of some Americans, so much that charismatic power hungry leaders will continue to capitalize on it? Will we, the democracy protectors, ever shame these deplorables out of existence? The book’s subject, DC Stephenson, the grand wizard in Indiana, and his rise on the back of Jim Crow and his hooded minions in all levels of social and political power reminded me so much of the character of 45 and the sycophants who continue to protect his lies and hatred. Will we ever drive that out of the American Experience, the great Experiment? I literally had to remind myself as I read this book: “This is NOT 45. This history is not now”, but the similarity was jaw dropping and frankly, it frightens me.
